The Market: Are you a regular?

Having grown up on a farm, my diet as a kid heavily consisted of home-grown fruit and vegetables, self-raised beef and lamb and eggs plucked straight from the chook house. How I wish I could go back to the simple life! Now living in the city, the closest thing I have to that quality fresh produce is at the market. I frequent the South Melbourne Market almost weekly, mainly on a Sunday when it’s so very entertaining listening to the stall holders bargain off their goods (and you get cheap produce!) I can often stock my fridge for the week on $20-30 of fruit and vegetables.

Not only is the produce more local than the big supermarket, it’s often a better price and better quality because it hasn’t been sitting in storage for months and months, as often the case in the supermarket. Fruit and vegetables picked so far in advance to store for a large supermarket chain lack many of the vital nutrients we eat fruit and veggies for in the first place! The majority of the nutrition develops at the late stage of growth and is the most nutritious at the peak of ripeness. Another thing to consider is to make sure you ask where your produce is grown – this will give you a good idea as to how ripe and nutritious it is.

We all know about the big markets around Melbourne, but have you ventured to one of the many farmer’s markets around the city and regional Victoria? This is a chance to get basic as well as gourmet produce direct from farmers. The team at the Victorian Farmers’ Markets Association do a great job of showcasing all of the available markets weekly.

This weekend’s farmers markets:

Sat 9 Apr 8:00am – 1:00pm
Collingwood Childrens Farm Farmers’ Market
St Heliers Street, Abbotsford (Melbourne) Vic

Sat 9 Apr 8:00am – 1:00pm
Coal Creek Farmers’ Market
Coal Creek Community Park & Museum, Silkstone Road, Korumburra (Gippsland) Vic

Sat 9 Apr 9:00am – 1:00pm
Bendigo Community Farmers’ Market
Rosalind Park end of Williamson Street, Bendigo (Goldfields) Vic

Sun 10 Apr 9:00am – 1:00pm
Melbourne Showgrounds Farmers’ Market
Federation Hall, Melbourne Showgrounds, Ascot Vale (Melbourne) Vic

As we get what might be the last of our summer weather, I’m going to make a point of getting outside and visiting a market or two this weekend. It’s a great chance to pick up some new season brassicas, walnuts, apples and pears, and plenty of wild mushrooms!
